Monitoring

Shopify Cart Monitoring

By Gary Gillespie · Last updated

The cart is deceptively complex: it's where the most apps overlap. This page covers the cart-specific failures monitoring should catch, especially during campaigns.

Why the cart is a conflict hotspot

The cart is where discount logic, upsell offers, free-gift rules, bundle builders and shipping estimators all run at once. Each is usually a separate app injecting its own scripts. When two collide — or one updates — the cart can error, double-apply a discount, or fail to advance to checkout. Because this often only triggers with a specific code or cart combination, it frequently first appears mid-campaign.

Discount codes deserve their own test

A discount code that silently fails to apply during BFCM is one of the most expensive Shopify bugs there is: ads keep spending, shoppers arrive expecting the promised price, and the code errors or does nothing. Cart monitoring can apply your campaign code as part of the run and assert the expected total, so a broken code surfaces before the campaign goes live rather than after.

From cart to checkout

Reaching the cart isn't the finish line. Cart monitoring confirms the "Checkout" action actually transitions to the Shopify checkout page with the right contents — the exact handoff where bundle and upsell apps tend to break.

Frequently asked questions

Why do carts break during Black Friday specifically?
Campaign-specific discount codes, higher cart values, and new bundle/upsell offers exercise code paths that are dormant the rest of the year, so latent app conflicts surface exactly when traffic peaks.
Can monitoring test a specific discount code?
Yes. Revenue Shield can apply a code during the run and assert the resulting total, so a broken or misconfigured code is caught before customers hit it.
What's the difference between cart and checkout monitoring?
Cart monitoring focuses on the cart step (quantities, discounts, upsells) and the handoff to checkout; checkout monitoring covers the full purchase path. Revenue Shield runs them as one continuous flow.
