What Is Checkout Monitoring?
If you sell online, checkout is the flow where a bug is guaranteed to cost money. This guide explains what checkout monitoring is and how it differs from the monitoring most stores already have.
A simple definition
Checkout monitoring is a type of synthetic monitoring focused on the purchase path. Rather than asking "is the website up?", it asks "can a customer actually buy?" — and answers it by having an automated browser attempt the purchase repeatedly and check each step worked.
How it works
On a schedule, the monitor launches a real browser, opens a product page, selects a variant, adds to cart, and advances to the checkout page, asserting the expected outcome at each stage. If Add to Cart doesn't fire, the cart errors, or checkout never loads, the run fails and you're alerted — ideally with the failing step, a screenshot and a video.
Why it matters more than uptime monitoring
Most checkout failures still return an HTTP 200 status, so uptime monitors stay silent. Checkout monitoring is the only kind that exercises the real page — theme, apps and scripts included — so it catches the broken buttons, script errors and app conflicts that actually lose orders. More on that in why an HTTP 200 store can still be broken.
The cost of not having it
Without checkout monitoring, the first signal of a broken checkout is usually falling sales or a customer complaint — hours or days after the break. On a store running paid traffic, every one of those hours is ad spend driving visitors into a checkout they can't complete. Monitoring turns that blind window into a minutes-long alert.
