Can AI agents buy from your Shopify store? We tested eight

By Gary Gillespie · Last updated

Everyone says AI agents are about to shop for us. We wanted to know what actually happens today on real Shopify stores, so we tested it. Stores are not named; they include three independent brands and two large public ones.

Method

For each store a script acting as an agent called, in order: the store's /.well-known/ucp profile, tools/list, search_catalog, get_product and create_cart, then requested the returned checkout link without following it into checkout. Nothing was bought and no payment step was touched. Every request and response status was recorded.

Result 1: the buying path works everywhere

StepStores that passed
Advertises agent shopping (UCP profile)8 of 8
Agent tools available (13 tools)8 of 8
Finds products8 of 8
Chooses an in-stock variant8 of 8
Builds a cart8 of 8
Gets a working checkout link8 of 8

Three of the stores block automated browsers on their storefront. They still passed, because UCP never loads the storefront. A store can be hard for a bot to browse and easy for an agent to buy from.

Result 2: offers go missing

We then asked a model acting as a shopping agent six everyday questions per store, using only the catalog data an agent receives. One sample each, so treat these as directional.

Shopper asksOffer visible to the agent
"Build me a complete routine under £75"2 of 5 stores (only where the bundle was described in text)
"Cheapest way to buy this every month"1 of 5 (the store with "Monthly Subscription" in titles)
"I want two of these"0 of 5 (no volume pricing in the data)
"What else do I need?"4 of 5
"I'm just below free delivery"0 of 5 (no threshold in the data)
"What's the best value option?"1 of 5, and the agent still chose a different product

The protocol has no field for selling plans, quantity breaks or shipping thresholds. If an offer lives only in an app widget or theme banner, an agent shopping through UCP will not see it.

What we would do as a merchant

  • Describe bundles and what they contain in the product description, not only in an app widget.
  • Name subscription options in product text where it reads naturally.
  • State price breaks and your free delivery threshold in plain words on the relevant products.
  • Monitor the agent path and the human checkout together, since agents hand off to the same checkout.

Frequently asked questions

Which AI assistants use the Universal Commerce Protocol?
UCP is Shopify's documented surface for AI agents. Which consumer assistants use it, and how often, changes quickly, so check Shopify's agentic commerce documentation for the current list.
Does passing this test mean AI assistants will recommend my products?
No. It shows the technical path works. Whether an assistant recommends you is a separate question about visibility, which needs sampled answers to measure.

Stop finding out from your customers

Revenue Shield buys from your live store every 15 minutes on desktop and mobile, and pings you the moment checkout actually breaks — with the failing step, a screenshot, and a replay.
